I live near Seongsu, but lately I rarely head toward Yeonmujang-gil, where so many international visitors now gather. It is not just the crowds. I often feel there are fewer relaxed places where I can have a quiet date or catch up properly with friends. That has led me to search mainly around North Seongsu for restaurants and cafés, and this time I found a wine bar that suited my taste particularly well.

Address: 1F, 25 Gwangnaru-ro 2-gil, Seongdong-gu, Seoul
Name: ACENO (아세누)
Aceno is close to the currently popular Pajak (파작), with Marione Pizza (마리오네 피자) right next door. As waiting lines become more common in North Seongsu, it is useful to have a place where you can book in advance through Catchtable and enjoy the meal without rushing. It looked suitable not only for a date, but also for a gathering where you hand out wedding invitations or for a business meal.

It is a small touch, but the welcome sign makes you feel genuinely received.
Interior
Before visiting, I looked through photos on Naver Blog and Catchtable and had the sense that the owner’s eye for design was anything but ordinary. In person, the interior was even more refined than I expected. The room is not especially large, but mirrors create an illusion of greater space. Because the restaurant occupies a corner, the view opens in several directions and never feels cramped—a welcome contrast to the many very narrow bars and cafés around Seongsu these days.
The businesses across the street are furniture shops and restaurants, which also gives the surroundings a clean, stylish impression. In alleys like this, a poorly chosen location can expose so much everyday residential clutter that it affects the mood of a meal, but every view from Aceno left a pleasant impression. A long table in the middle also looked well suited to a group of about five or six people.

Aceno, a restaurant worth noticing in North Seongsu.

Details as small as the napkin are enough to delight a marketer.
Aceno’s Menu
At a good restaurant, the menu often reveals its philosophy toward food. Aceno’s selection is substantial, covering steak, pasta, small plates, wine, and other drinks, yet the hand-drawn illustrations and short comments keep it from feeling difficult or stiff. I was particularly taken with the “Our Favorites” section introducing wines personally recommended by the staff. It gives the impression that everyone working here cares about the food and wine, while also making it easy for a guest to choose a bottle without necessarily asking for help. I thought it was a clever format.

Because I visited at lunchtime, I ordered the green tea sparkling non-alcoholic wine. It had a layered fruit aroma without being overly sweet. The flavor worked well with creamy dishes, while the gentle carbonation made it a good match for fish. It felt like the right choice.

Uni Potato
Fresh uni, shredded potato, and cheese.
I love uni far too much to pass up this dish—especially when it had a star beside it on the menu. The shredded potato had been cooked to a point somewhere between soft and crisp, then topped with a cheese-based uni sauce. Its rich, nutty savor was excellent. Coarsely ground black pepper kept the creamy flavors from becoming heavy, and the potato texture was calibrated so well that I enjoyed the dish to the end without tiring of it.

There was a genuinely generous presence of uni. The more I chewed, the more its savor blended into the flavor of the potato.

Gnocchi
Quattro formaggi and a Gruyère crisp.
It was only after the food arrived that I wondered whether I looked like someone obsessed with potatoes and cheese. The ingredients overlapped with the uni potato, but the soft, gently sweet chew of the gnocchi made it feel like a completely different dish. The sauce carried the deep aroma of several cheeses, while the salty Gruyère crisp on top intensified the sweet-and-savory contrast. Baek-kimchi, the white kimchi served alongside it in case the dish felt too rich, added crunch and acidity and restored the balance.

The gnocchi was not extremely chewy; it was tender enough to cut easily with a spoon. I especially liked the crisp sear on the outside.
Seasonal Fish
Seasonal fish—flounder in summer—with miso sauce, smoked chickpeas, and celery pickle.
Aceno is apparently known for its steak, but since I had chosen a light drink that day, I ordered the fish. I was also curious about the miso sauce, which is not something I often see served this way elsewhere.
Flounder was the summer selection. It was small, but soft, boneless, and easy to portion, which made it well suited to serving whole. I particularly liked that the skin resting against the plate had been cooked until crisp. The celery pickle added needed texture to the tender fish and was so good that I asked for a refill. The miso sauce was neither salty nor overpowering; it wrapped the other flavors in a restrained, subtle layer.

Aceno’s Restroom
Given the owner’s design sensibility, I suspected even the restroom might be distinctive, so I went to wash my hands. It was exactly the kind of interior I had expected. There is only one stall and it is shared by all genders, but it is located inside the restaurant and was very clean.

An Experience Completed by Details
The most memorable detail at Aceno was the receipt. I had never seen a restaurant print a receipt on paper this thick and rigid, and both its color and design were excellent.
I think the starting point of spatial branding is a serious consideration of the experience you want to give a customer. Only when the craft needed to realize that idea supports it can the feeling truly reach the guest. I sensed that thinking throughout Aceno’s many details. It left an impression not simply as a good restaurant, but as a place I would want to share with people I care about. I hear the steak is excellent; the next time I am in Seongsu, that is what I plan to order.
